“Taller Portobelo played a pivotal role in my life and work. My first international travel was with Taller Portobelo and I spent many years in Portobelo, Panama learning and growing as an artist. What makes these bonds even more salient is my own personal connection to Panama. My father was born and raised in Colon. So the bonds made were not merely cultural, professional, or even creative, they are familial. Portobelo is home! I am a proud member of the village.
Every brush stroke I make today, every word in every lecture I give, every opportunity I have to curate experiences or mentor a new generation of artists, is inspired by and filled with the deep love and compassion shown to me by my Taller Portobelo Family!”

Mi primer viaje internacional fue con Taller Portobelo y pasé mucho tiempo en Portobelo, Panamá aprendiendo y creciendo como artista. Lo que hace que estos lazos sean aún más destacados es mi conexión personal con Panamá. Mi padre nació y se crió en Colón. “Taller Portobelo was one of my first experiences traveling internationally and participating in an artist residency program. Along with fellow classmate and dear friend, Amy Sherald and the Spelman College Summer Art Colony, I ventured to Panama and immersed myself in a culture that left a long-lasting impact on my formative years as an artist and young adult. I, for the first time, felt truly American and at the same time a part of a global community. Traveling the countryside and exploring the natural beauty of Portobelo led me to painting water for the first time. Through our gracious host, Sandra Eleta, who opened her home and welcomed us like family I will forever feel bonded. And through this nurturing environment, I felt open to challenge my creativity and learn from the very talented artists of Taller Portobelo. I often reflect on my time there and feel so blessed to have had such a rich experience. “
Taller Portobelo fue una de mis primeras experiencias viajando internacionalmente y participando en un programa de residencia de artistas. Junto con mi compañera de clase y querida amiga, Amy Sherald y la colonia de arte de Spelman College, me aventuré a Panamá y me sumergí en una cultura que dejó un impacto duradero en mis años de formación como artista y adulta joven. Yo, por primera vez, me sentí verdaderamente estadounidense y al mismo tiempo formaba parte de una comunidad global. Viajar por el campo y explorar la belleza natural de Portobelo me llevó a pintar agua por primera vez. A través de nuestra amable anfitriona, Sandra Eleta, quien abrió su casa y nos recibió como familia, siempre me sentiré unida a ese lugar. Y a través de este entorno enriquecedor, me sentí abierta a desafiar mi creatividad y a aprender de los talentosos artistas del Taller Portobelo. A menudo reflexiono sobre mi tiempo allí y me siento muy bendecida por haber tenido una experiencia tan enriquecedora.

“My first trip to Portobelo, Panama was right after my graduation from college. This journey was my introduction to the African Diaspora. It was the first time I had traveled abroad from United States and encountered people that looked like me and shared my ancestral roots. The story of the village is centered around a people that escaped enslavement. The history of Portobelo is rich and places you feet away from where black bodies were moved through the Trans Atlantic slave trade. The remnants of dungeons, slave blocks, and cannons exist alongside a beautiful people and place so rich in culture it should be considered a national treasure.
Being presented with the opportunity to travel to Panama started the evolution of my identity as an artist along with Dr. Lindsay’s mentorship. What is exceptional about this international residency is that it allows you to live within the community and work with other artists from the community. This particular community has become an extension of my family. The Spelman College Art Colony was my first trip but I returned many times to participate in other programming. I was selected to make an outdoor sculpture project and in addition to that I also returned to assist Arturo in installing his own work at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Panama City.
This is a community that gives back just by existing. I am grateful for my time there.”
Mi primer viaje a Portobelo, Panamá fue inmediatamente después de mi graduación de la Universidad. Este viaje fue mi introducción a la diáspora africana. Era la primera vez que viajaba fuera de los Estados Unidos y que me encontraba con gente que se me parecía y que compartía conmigo las raíces de nuestros ancestros. La historia del pueblo se centra alrededor de la gente que escapó la esclavización. La historia de Portobelo es muy rica y se halla muy cerca de aquellos lugares donde los cuerpos negros fueron traficados durante el comercio transatlántico de esclavizados. Los restos de los calabozos, de las subastas de esclavos y cañones cohabitan con gente noble y lugares tan ricos en cultura que son considerados tesoros nacionales.
Tener la posibilidad de viajar a Panamá ha empezó mi identidad como artista bajo la guía del Dr. Lindsay. Lo más excepcional de esta residencia es que permite a uno vivir con una comunidad que se ha convertido en una familia extendida. La colonia de arte de Spelman ha sido mi primer viaje pero he regresado muchas veces para participar en otros programas. Fui seleccionada para hacer una escultura al aire libre y además de eso también volví a asistir a Arturo durante la instalación de su trabajo en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo en la ciudad de Panamá.
Esta es una comunidad que te da mucho con solo existir. Estoy realmente agradecida por el tiempo que he pasado ahí.
